Peebles Silver Band Welcomes Alan Fernie as our Musical Director & Conductor

Alan was born in 1960,in the Scottish mining village of Newtongrange. He learned to play the trombone at school, soon joining the local brass band. After studying at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, with Peter Oram and Percy Cook, and at Goldsmith's College in London, with Harold Nash, he played professionally with all of Scotland's symphony orchestras.

In 1982, he joined the instrumental staff of Edinburgh Schools and for ten years worked in the Wester Hailes area teaching music and directing the renowned WHEC Show-band, winners in 1995 o the McDonald's Child of Achievement award. In 2002, he took a post in Midlothian and is now teaching brass in the county's schools. He also finds time to be a visiting lecturer "Arranging for Brass Band" at Accrington & Rossendale College in Lancashire.

He began conducting in 1986 with Selkirk Band, and has gone on to work in this capacity with various ensembles all over Scotland, enjoying considerable competition success. As a conductor, teacher and solo performer he worked in the U.S.A, Norway and Switzerland.

He began writing music whilst still at college, mainly for the quintet Caledonia Brass with whome he still plays. He is widely published, with arrangements played throughout the world. Several of his works have entered the 'standards' repertoire for brass. Many have been recorded and broadcast by Europe's finest wind and brass bands. and in 1998 a CD of his music called Brass Night was made famous (Courtois) Band. He also write for Orchestra, Big band and Choir.

Peebles Silver Band  is delighted that Alan Fernie has agreed to take the band forward during 2008 and will do the best to justify Alan's faith in us.
